“Ceasefire agreement undermined”, Scandinavian monitors

[July 29, 2003 - 9.30 GMT]

The Scandinavian Monitors stressed today that the ceasefire agreement signed by the Government of Sri Lanka and the LTTE, February 2002 had been undermined.

Speaking to the PRIU, spokeswoman Agnes Bragadottir said deputy chief Hagrup Haukland had been critical of the LTTE and their attitude to ceasefire rulings. Haukland was concerned at the LTTE’s refusal to vacate their Wan Ela camp in Kinniya in a government-controlled territory in Trincomalee.

She reiterated the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission’s (SLMM) stand, saying the parties in the ceasefire agreement created the SLMM and conferred its current powers.

“They created us and gave us powers and then they undermine our rulings. If they do not respect us then they should re-consider our future role”, she said.

Bragadottir confirmed that the SLMM ruling on the Wan Ela camp came after a thorough investigation and by using maps that were supplied by the LTTE sometime ago and that chief Tryggve Tellefsen had written to LTTE political wing leader S.P. Tamilselvan urging the LTTE to vacate the camp at the earliest.
