Thai PM due tomorrow

[August 13, 2003 - 9.00 GMT]

Thai Prime Minister, Dr. Thaksin Shinawatra, is due in Sri Lanka tomorrow on a two-day official visit. Dr. Shinawatra will call on President Chandrika Kumaratunga; he will then meet Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe for discussions on bilateral issues.

This will be the first visit to Sri Lanka by an elected leader of Thailand. The Thai PM will be accompanied by a high-level delegation comprising the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Commerce and Culture, senior officials and business leaders.

The Thai PM’s visit coincides with the 250th Anniversary of Shyamopali Nikaya (Siam Wing). History records a Thai monk Upali Thero, who braved a hazardous sea voyage from Thailand to Sri Lanka to propagate Buddhism.
