Resumption
of peace talks by end September, speculates Prof. Peiris

The Government spokesman
Prof. G.L Peiris today expressed confidence the peace talks between the GOSL
and the LTTE would resume by the end of September. Speaking to the press
Peiris said he learns from the French Government that the LTTE will hold an
internal discussion with their legal experts in Paris from August 21-27.
The LTTE are expected to
discuss the Government’s latest proposal to set up an interim
administration in the North East. Peiris said the LTTE have asked for more
time; two to three weeks after the Paris discussions, to release their
views.
Referring to the LTTE’s
Kinnya camp located allegedly in Government controlled territory, Professor
Peiris said according to the Norwegians, ‘the LTTE have not given a
definite NO on the issue’. He did concede however that recent LTTE actions
were undermining public support for the peace process.
“The Government has
consistently abided by the ceasefire agreement. The view of the Sri Lanka
Monitoring Mission is decisive. Both sides agreed to obey their rulings”,
he said.
