A
Royalist was the first!
[August
29, 2003 - 5.30 GMT]
Our
article “Francis-first
Sri Lankan to win a swim gold” of August 26, said Conrad
Francis was the first Sri Lankan to win a gold medal in swimming at an
international meet. One of our readers points out while Francis’s
achievement was a great honour to Sri Lanka, he was not the first to achieve
this feat.
In
1974, Timothy Speldewinde, an old Royalist won gold and silver medals
respectively for the 100 and 200 metres butterfly stroke at the Asian Age
Group Swimming Meet in Manila, Philippines.
We
thank Mr. Mohamed Imtiaz of Singapore for the information, while we stand
corrected.
