The Government’s chief
peace negotiator Prof. G.L. Peiris says the current peace process has built
foreign investor confidence in the country.
The recent Malaysian
investment seminar was very successful said the Professor adding, “We have
never experienced this level of enthusiasm”.
Speaking to the media in
Colombo today, Prof. Peiris said some of the largest companies in Kuala
Lumpur had shown interest in investment in infrastructure, mainly roads,
highways, telecommunication, power and energy sector and ports development.
A Malaysian company will construct a highway between Kandy and Colombo and
the agreement is due to be signed when Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe
visits that country later this month.
Meanwhile Minister of
Tourism Gamini Lokuge said plans were underway to diversify Sri Lanka’s
tourism industry. He said the Government hoped to promote wildlife and
eco-tourism.
“We have to move away
from simply being ‘a place near the beach’. Ours is a country where you
can enjoy the beach, wildlife and hill country within a few hours of each,
and not have to spend days traveling to enjoy these different environments”
said Lokuge.
