Tokyo Donors’ Conference progress review next week [September 4, 2003 - 10.30 GMT]

Japanese Peace envoy, Yashushi Akashi will be in Sri Lanka next week to review developments after the June Tokyo Donors’ Conference.

“We will discuss a whole range of issues such as utilisation of the pledged aid and the progress so far,” Cabinet spokesman Prof. G L Peiris said at a press briefing today.

“The Japanese government has invited the LTTE to take part in these discussions,” Prof. Peiris said. The LTTE did not take part in the Tokyo conference, demanding an Interim Administration and bringing the peace talks to a halt.

Multilateral institutions and representatives from the other donor countries will also be in Colombo for the discussions.

Akashi is also due to meet with Muslim leaders in the East to discuss their issues and problems.
