Archbishop’s condolence message on Maha Nayaka’s demise

[September 11, 2003 - 10.00 GMT]

We were deeply saddened to hear of the demise of the Most Venerable Agga Maha Panditha Madihe Pannasiha Maha Nayaka Thera- the Head of the Amarapura Nikaya of Sri Lanka.

The Venerable Maha Nayaka Thera was an erudite scholar, a great advocate of moral values in society and an ardent champion of the Buddhist cause. During the past twenty years he has shown a keen interest in religious dialogue and has advocated religious unity for the purpose of building up a society that is morally upright, just and free.

I have had the privilege of associating him closely and have been deeply impressed by his humility and dedication to the cause he served. His friendliness and concern for people were remarkable. The contributions he made towards the social and intellectual upliftment of the Buddhist community has brought him recognition both locally and abroad.

As a Catholic community in Sri Lanka we express our deepest sympathy to the members of the Maha Sangha and our bereaved Buddhist brethren.

Most Rev. Dr. Oswald Gomis

Archbishop
