G. L. Peiris says LTTE camps in Trinco no threat to East

[September 12, 2003 - 6.00 GMT]

At the weekly cabinet briefing yesterday Government spokesman Prof. G. L. Peiris said the thirteen LTTE camps in Trincomalee area were not all new. He dismissed all opposition claims that the LTTE established these camps after the Ceasefire Agreement was signed.

“Apart from Manirasakulam, all the other camps were either in existence before the Ceasefire Agreement signed or may have come up in areas which are not effectively dominated by the government,” Prof. Peiris said addressing the weekly media briefing.

The main opposition People’s Alliance (PA) recently brought to the public notice the thirteen new LTTE camps in government-controlled areas in Trincomalee vicinity.

“The South rim of Trinco harbour is surrounded by the LTTE it is posing a grave threat to the Naval dockyard and the oil tanks while the government was sleeping on the job,” charged PA spokesman Sarath Amunugama at a media briefing.

The PA called on Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe to summon the Parliament immediately and deal with the situation.

Prof. Peiris denying the Opposition’s charges said the government assures the country quite categorically and specifically the security of the Eastern province and the Port of Trincomalee is in no danger whatsoever.
