Disenchanted member of the police commission quits

[September 15, 2003 - 5.30 GMT]

A member of the National Police Commission has tendered his resignation to the President. While thanking the President for the trust reposed in him Dr B S Wijeweera has explained the reasons for his decision to the President and to the Constitutional Council.

Dr.Wijeweera has referred to the improper and dishonourable conduct of a member of the Police Commission for his disillusionment and his decision to quit. The President has accepted Dr. Wijeweera’s resignation appreciating the reasons for his decision.

The President in a letter to its Chairman expressed her displeasure at the failure of the Constitutional Council to recommend for appointment well qualified, politically neutral and independent persons endowed with qualities of integrity and impartiality.

The President reminded the Chairman of earlier occasions, when she has had to bring to the notice of the Constitutional Council the unsuitability of certain candidates recommended to her for appointment. The President in her letter says the current selection procedure needs to be revised if the Council were to attract candidates of good caliber. The inordinate delays in finalizing these matters would result in erosion of public confidence in the Constitutional Council she reminded the Chairman.
