Donors firm, “no aid if peace process is stagnant”

[September 15, 2003 - 9.00 GMT]

At the follow-up meeting in Colombo to Tokyo donors’ conference, the donors reiterated, aid to Sri Lanka would be forthcoming only if there was substantial progress in the peace process between the government of Sri Lanka (GOSL) and the LTTE.

The meeting held at Hilton Hotel, September 12, was a review meeting of the donors’ conference held in June, where an estimated $ 4.5 billion US dollars was pledged as aid to Sri Lanka.

Twelve donor countries and seven international organizations attended the meeting chaired by Japanese special representative to Sri Lanka Yasushi Akashi, assisted by the EU and USA. Both parties in the peace process were invited to the meeting by the Japanese government. Senior ministers and officials of the GOSL participated. The LTTE however chose to boycott the event.

According to a release from the Peace Secretariat the participants welcomed the continued commitment of both parties to the peace process and reaffirmed the importance of urgent humanitarian and rehabilitation assistance in the North East.
