No Sri Lankan inmates injured in Male prison riot

[September 23, 2003 - 10.15 GMT]

The Maldivian authorities have informed the Sri Lankan mission in that country that no Sri Lankan inmates were injured in Male’s Maafushi prison riots on the 19th and 20th September.

The killing of two inmates trigged street violence Saturday in the archipelago.

Meanwhile the death toll from the prison violence rose to three, as an inmate who was flown with two other wounded men to Colombo overnight died, AFP reported.

Maldivian sources claimed that the violence was unrelated to the re-election bid of President Abdul Gayoom. The situation in Male has now returned to normal with schools and business establishments open as usual.
