The 58th
session of the U N General Assembly began yesterday in New York with 191
countries participating under tight security.
UN General Secretary Kofi
Annan chaired the inaugural session, while US President George Bush
delivered the keynote address. The Heads of States of Brazil, Peru and
France also addressed the assembly.
“Terrorism will only
be defeated if we act to solve the political disputes and long-standing
conflicts which generate support for it. If we do not, we shall find
ourselves acting as a recruiting sergeant for the very terrorists we seek to
suppress,” warned Kofi Annan, according to media reports.
Prime Minister Ranil
Wickremesinghe is scheduled to address the assembly Friday, September 26.
