New US envoy presents credentials

The new US Ambassador for Sri Lanka Jeffrey J. Lunstead, presented his credentials to President Chandrika Kumaratunga, Friday September 26 at the President’s House.

Ambassador Lunstead is a member of the Senior Foreign Service with the rank of Minister-Counselor. He was sworn in as Ambassador to Sri Lanka and Maldives on July 28, 2003.

He entered the Foreign Service in 1977 and has served in Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, and Malaysia. He has also served in several positions dealing with international environmental issues, including the post of Director, Office for Environmental Policy. He has received two Superior Honor Awards and one Meritorious Honor Award.

The Ambassador completed his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Notre Dame, Indiana in 1969 and his Ph.D. (with distinction) in South Asia Studies from the University of Pennsylvania in 1977. He is the author of several articles on ancient and modern South Asia. He speaks several Asian languages including Tamil.
