Indians to become Sri Lankan

[October 08, 2003 - 8.45 GMT]

Persons of Indian origin will get Sri Lankan citizenship under a new bill passed unanimously by voice vote in Parliament yesterday.

Interior Minister John Amaratunga who introduced the Grant of Citizenship to Persons of Indian Origin Bill said estate workers were making a major contribution to the country’s economy and they should be looked after.

The Act will enable any person of Indian origin who has been a permanent resident of Sri Lankan since October 30, 1964 or a descendent of a person living in Sri Lanka since then to obtain citizenship with all the rights and privileges to which a citizen of Sri Lanka is entitled to by law.

The legislators rose above politics with the unanimous acceptance of this bill granting equal rights to people who’ve been stateless.
