President meets Singapore leaders

President Kumaratunga now on a state visit to Singapore held bilateral talks with her Singaporean counterpart S. R. Nathan yesterday.

The two leaders discussed ways and means of improving economic relations between the two countries.

President Kumaratunga was of the view that Singapore could take advantage of the Indo-Lanka Free Trade Agreement now in place. The Singaporean President agreed Sri Lanka could serve as a gateway to reach the vast Indian market.

President Nathan told President Kumaratunga of his special interest in Buddhism and that the two counties should work towards its propagation.

Discussions between President Kumaratunga and Singapore Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong focused on matters of security, which concern the two countries.

Sri Lankan President also met with Jordan’s King Abdullah II who is also in Singapore for the summit. The two leaders agreed to strengthen ties between Sri Lanka and Jordan, the welfare of Sri Lankan expatriate workers in Jordan came up for discussion.

President Kumaratunga also held discussions with senior minister Lee Kwan Yew.
