[October 22, 2003 - 10.00 GMT]

Prime Ministers Ranil Wickremasinghe and Atal Behari Vajpayee yesterday signed an agreement to allow India’s private airlines to begin commercial flights to Sri Lanka.

The two countries also agreed, “to do away with the existing requirement of commercial agreements between designated airlines of the two countries for asymmetrical operations”.

A joint statement says that Sri Lanka’s private airlines will be allowed daily commercial flights between Colombo and six Indian destinations, Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Hydrabad and Kolkata. Besides, these airlines will have unlimited access to 18 tourist destinations in India.
