Chief of Staff assumes duties

Commander Lt. General Lionel Balagalla assumed duties as the Chief of
Defence Staff (CDS) yesterday, 27th October.
“The
Military is able to safeguard the interests of the country”, assured the new
Chief of Staff at a ceremony marking the event held at the Joint Operations
Headquarters, Colombo.
Lt.
General Balagalla is the first serving Army Commander to take charge of a
joint command, which will coordinate the activities of the security forces.
The post has been vacant since June last year when the then CDS Rohan
Daluwatta retired to take up the post of Sri Lankan High Commissioner to Brazil.
President Chandrika Kumaratunga appointed Gen. Balagalla as the CDS on
October 10.
