A confident government
spokesman today told the media that the long awaited rebel proposals for
self-rule in the North and East will be delivered on Friday 31st
October.
Spokesman G.L. Peiris
said Norway’s envoy Hans Brattskar is due to travel to the rebel stronghold
to collect the proposals, a copy of which will be sent to President
Kumaratunga once it reaches the government authorities. Another copy will be
sent to Muslim affairs Minister Rauff Hakeem, currently in London.
Deputy Foreign Minister
of Norway Vidar Helgessen is due in the island for a two-day visit in
November to discuss in detail the proposals.
“We will then ask them in
their capacity as facilitators to organize a meeting between the government
and the LTTE, so that preliminary methods and substantive issues can be
discussed very early in January,” said the government spokesman.
The Spokesman said the
government would study the proposals Friday night and issue a brief response
early Saturday morning.
