President relieves three ministers of portfolios

The President today 4th November relieved three cabinet ministers of their portfolios by virtue of the powers vested in the President under the Constitution of the Republic of Sri Lanka. The reasons for the action are in the national interest said a communiqué issued by the office of the President. The ministers have been given the reasons in writing.

The communiqué further said this action was taken after careful thought, in order to prevent further deterioration of the security situation in the country.

The three portfolios are Defence, Interior, and Mass Communications.

The Ministers concerned will however continue to hold their other portfolios.

The President today appointed two new ministry secretaries. Cyril Herath a former police chief for the defense ministry and a former health ministry secretary Tilak Ranaviraja for the mass communications ministry. The incumbent secretary to the ministry of the interior M N Junaid will continue in his post.
