Sovereignty not negotiable says Kadirgamar

[November 5, 2003 - 6.00 GMT]

“The sovereignty of Sri Lanka is not negotiable”, Presidential Adviser Lakshman Kadirgamar told a media briefing today. The Sri Lanka Freedom Party rejecting the recently revealed LTTE proposals in a 14-page document, highlighted areas that affect the sovereignty of the Republic of Sri Lanka.

Asked whether the events of yesterday where the President relieved three cabinet ministers of their portfolios would affect the peace talks Kadirgamar said, “I would like to think the LTTE is serious enough to resume talks, but I cannot read the mind of the LTTE”

“The SLFP is not against amending the Constitution, in fact the SLFP brought a new Constitution. In the end the people will have to decide whether they are willing to surrender 2/3 of the country” he said.

However he said that the UNF government was still in charge of handling the peace negotiations and that there would be no change in that respect.
