NorthEast merger to continue

[November 13, 2003 - 7.00 GMT]

The present NorthEast merger will continue for another year. President Kumaratunga by virtue of the powers vested in her by Paragraph (b) of Sub-Section (2) of Section 37 of the Provincial Councils Act, No. 42 of 1987, postponed the date of the poll in the Eastern Province to November 17, 2004 and the date of the poll in the Northern Province December 1, 2004. A gazette to this effect was published on the 6th of November 2003.

The polls for the Northern and Eastern provinces were to be held later this year on November 17 and December 1, 2003 respectively.
