[November 25, 2003 - 5.00 GMT]

Today Muslims world over celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr concluding a month of fasting. President Kumaratunga and Prime Minister Wickremesinghe issued messages in honour of this day.

President Chandrika Kumaratunga in her message said “On this holy day of Ramazan to restore a peaceful life for all our Muslim brethren, we should heal the pain of mind of the Muslims who have been displaced from their homes in the North East. We should dispel fear from their minds. It is essential that we ensure every member of the Muslim community living on this land, a peaceful life with equal rights.”

“The spiritual dimension of the fast, transcends the manifest, it generates a response from Muslims in acts of prayer, worship, kindness and compassion to their fellow men. It is then an opportune moment to reflect on not only inner peace and tranquillity, but also to accelerate the momentum towards the peace effort and bring about a lasing and permanent peace among all communities,” said Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.
