President directs defense authorities to normalize Trinco situation

[December 2, 2003 - 10.30 GMT]

President Chandrika Kumaratunga yesterday December 1, directed the defence forces and the Police chief to take immediate action to normalize the situation in the Trincomalee district.

The Police and the Nordic ceasefire monitors are now investigating the causes for the most recent unrest in Eastern Sri Lanka. A comprehensive police report is expected within the next two days, states a communiqué from the President’s Office.

On Saturday, November 29, three Muslim farmers were brutally killed in Kinniya, a small town in the Trincomalee district. The killings took place when the victims, were minding their paddy fields located allegedly in an LTTE-controlled area.

The Police have set up a special 24-hour Emergency Unit in Trincomalee to receive confidential complaints via telephone, on situations that may lead to confrontation or tension. The assurance of confidentiality the Police believe will expedite the flow of information.
