President, PM talks: deadline extended

[December 16, 2003 - 9.00 GMT]

President Chandrika Kumaratunga and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe extended the deadline to resolve the current political impasse as talks held on Monday, December 15, the previously set deadline, failed to resolve the issue.

Representatives of the President and the PM were unable to work out an arrangement for co-habitation, but agreed to meet again as both sides presented fresh proposals for discussion. A date has yet to be set for the next meeting.

Since November 4 the President and the Prime Minister have held four rounds of talks to find a solution to the current political stalemate.
