Attacks on two Christian
places of worship were reported from the suburbs of Colombo on Sunday,
December 27. Yesterday a visibly moved President Kumaratunga directed the
Police Chief Indra de Silva to take immediate action against those
responsible for the crime.
In a hastily issued
statement in Sinhala the President said all religious groups had lived in
harmony in Sri Lanka.
“Even as far back as
the time of the Sinhala kings all religious groups had been free to practice
their faith without any barrier. It would be a shame for the nation if
religious intolerance and hatred is allowed at a time when the country needs
peace and tolerance, more than ever before,” said the President.
President Kumaratunga
appealed to people to ensure that seditious elements are not allowed to sow
dissension and hatred. She said the sternest action will be taken against
all those who attempt to create such problems.
The President also asked
the Police Chief for a full report on those persons responsible for the
reported attack.
