A new political alliance formed
[January 20, 2004 - 7.30 GMT]

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party and the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna [The Peoples Liberation Front] today signed a pact sealing their political union. The new alliance is to be known as the United People’s Freedom Alliance. The once proscribed JVP entered the political mainstream in 1994 and now holds 16 parliamentary seats.

The General Secretaries of the two parties SLFP’s Maithripala Sirisena and the JVP’s Tilvin Silva signed on behalf of their parties. The MoU is based on five basic principles: development of the economy, solving the national question, preserving national heritage, an independent foreign policy and strengthening democracy.

The ceremonial signing ceremony took place this morning at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) in the presence of a large gathering of politicians, intellectuals, artistes and media men. The event was covered live on National Television. Both parties appealed to the people not to be misled by false propaganda and promised the alliance would work towards the development of Sri Lanka.
