President Chandrika Kumaratunga in a message to mark the 56th Independence Day which fell on February 4 said the time has come for Sri Lanka to take stock of its achievements as an independent nation.

“Perhaps this is a good time to take stock of our achievements as an independent nation. I believe we the elected leaders of Sri Lanka should reflect on how we would be remembered by future generations,” she said.

“In fifty-six years we have come far, yet with peace we could have gone much further,” said Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe in his Independence Day message.

The Prime Minister further said it will be every Sri Lankans joint mission to create a more peaceful and prosperous future.
