The World Bank on Thursday, February 12, ruled out direct funding to the LTTE for reconstruction work in the North and East of Sri Lanka. The LTTE had requested for direct funding from the international community citing the present political situation in the South as not being conducive for development.

World Bank country director Peter Harold said the international community was unable to give money directly to the LTTE and the funding could only be carried out through officially recognized channels.

“The international community has made it abundantly clear that it cannot disburse directly to the LTTE so long as they are not a recognized structure”, Harold said.
