 The
16th death anniversary of popular film actor turned politician
Vijaya Kumaratunga falls today, February 16. He was the husband of
President Chandrika Kumaratunga.
Vijaya
made his entrée to silver screen playing the lead role in the film
“Hanthane Kathawa”. He was brutally assassinated outside his residence
at Polhengoda on February 16, 1988.
He
was the founder leader of the Sri Lanka Mahajana Party and continued a
valiant struggle to restore peace in the country. He led peace missions to
the North on a number of occasions.
A
special floral tribute was paid to commemorate the anniversary at his statue
at Seeduwa, 28 km from the capital Colombo, today.
