“The
letter regarding the revoking of the television license granted to the Asia
Broadcasting Corporation (Pvt) Ltd was sent to the corporation Saturday
February 7, 2004 at 3pm. This was before the dissolution of Parliament and
therefore before Lakshman Kadirgamar was appointed Minister of Information
and Telecommunication” said Media Ministry Secretary Tilak Raniviraja.
Speaking
to PRIU, Raniviraja clarified the issue saying that ABC Ltd has not been
utilizing its Television license and the frequency allocation it had
obtained, during the past five years. It was therefore a routine procedure
to cancel such unutilized licenses.
He
said however the ABC’s radio channels will continue uninterrupted.
