Dr. Shirani Bandaranayke was sworn-in before President Chandrika Kumaratunga
yesterday, February 19, as Acting Chief Justice.
Justice Shirani
Bandaranayke is the first woman Acting Chief Justice in the country’s
judicial history. Justice Bandaranayke was the youngest woman Supreme Court
Judge ever to have been appointed to the Supreme Court.
Justice Bandaranayke was
appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court on October 30, 1996.
Chief Justice Sarath N.
Silva PC left the country to attend the SAARC Chief Justices’ Conference
to be held in Karachi, Pakistan. Justice Bandaranayke will act for the Chief
Justice until his return to the country.
