President and PM begin their campaigns

The Freedom Alliance and United National Front launched their election campaigns yesterday. The newly-formed UPFA launched its campaign in the ancient city of Anuradhapura.

President Chandrika Kumaratunga, the leader of the alliance said the new government will recommence the stalled peace talks with the LTTE to reach a solution and ensure the rights of all communities. The President further said that the Sri Lanka Freedom Party and Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna were committed to solve this national problem through a negotiated settlement without resorting to war.

The President said the Alliance has a clear programme to solve the unemployment problem in the country. “We have identified the job opportunities and ways and means of providing these jobs to the youth of the country,” she said. Describing the future Alliance Government’s economic policy, the President said steps will be taken to promote local industries by providing concessions to small and medium local enterprises.

The United National Front's election campaign was formally launched in Kandy yesterday under the leadership of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. 

The Premier said the United National Front has comprehensive plans to improve the economy and take the country towards a better future.

“We don’t have just a policy statement. We have very comprehensive programmes. Our Regaining Sri Lanka programme has been well-accepted by the international community and they are extending aid and other assistance to implement that programme,” he said.

Prime Minister Wickremasinghe said his party was dedicated and plans rebuild the country while establishing lasting peace.

“This is a very decisive election. It will determine your future. We can develop the country within the next 10 years and establish a prosperous country,” he told party supporters.
