Space Age Visionary and
Author Sir Arthur C Clarke made Sri Lanka’s first Third Generation (3G)
telephone call to President Chandrika Kumaratunga yesterday, March 2. This
marks the dawn of a new era in Sri Lankan mobile communications.
A premier mobile
telephone network in Sri Lanka, Dialog GSM introduced 3G which is a fully
fledged video telephony conversation over a mobile phone. This is the first
network to embark on 3G mobile telephony in South Asia. 3G will completely
revamp existing voice, text and data services replacing them with high
quality mobile multimedia services integrating voice, data and video.
The 3G services will be
available in the city center initially and will be extended throughout
Colombo in the near future.
Dialog CEO Dr. Hans
Wijayasuriya went on to thank the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission
and the Sri Lankan government for progressive regulatory thinking in
permitting the 3G trial in the country.
