The
current media blitz on the spread of bird flu in the Asian region has had a
critical impact on the local poultry industry. Several small farms have shut
down due a marked drop in the consumption of poultry products.
Members
of the Island’s poultry farmers association called on the President
on Thursday 4th March to convey their concerns. ‘Close
to million people are directly or indirectly involved in the industry for
their livelihood’ they said.
Dr.
D. D. Wanasinghe, Chairman of the Association told the President there has
not been a single case of bird flu or Avian flu reported in Sri Lanka.
The
All Island Poultry Association was happy the
Department of Animal Production and Health in Sri Lanka has taken effective
measures to prevent bird flu from entering the country. They welcomed
the Government’s decision early this year to ban the imports of poultry
products from all Asian countries.
On
Friday, March 5, 2004 the Secretary to the
President, W J S Karunaratne wrote to all media organisations appealing for
their assistance to allay public fears.
