Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan today reached magic mark of 500 test wickets in his 87th test match. The Asgiriya Stadium in his hometown Kandy erupted into celebrations when he clean bowled Australia’s Michael Kasprowicz on the first day of the second test.

Muralitharan is the third cricketer to claim 500 test wickets. Muralitharan, 31, joins retired West Indies fast bowler Courtney Walsh and Shane Warne, who got his 500th wicket last week during the first Test in Galle. Muralitharan is the youngest to reach this milestone in the least number of matches. In 2oo2 the prestigious Wisden Cricket Magazine named him and the late Sir Don Bradman as the two of the greatest cricketers in the history of the sport.
