Japanese to monitor election

The Japanese government will send a team of election observers to monitor the upcoming April 2 election following a request made by the Election Commissioner. This is the first time that Japan has sent such a mission to Sri Lanka.

The Japanese Embassy in a press release said the monitoring team will be sent as part a of Japan’s efforts to help advance the Sri Lankan peace process. 

The election monitoring team, consisting of ministry officials and others from the private sector, will leave for Sri Lanka - later this month and stay in the country for a week to monitor the balloting, the Embassy said. 

Currently several foreign teams are in Colombo to conduct monitoring work.
