Presidential Scholarships for over 1000 NE students

St Mary's Girls College Trincomalee auditorium was packed last morning as 1384 GCE A/L qualified students in the northeast were awarded with Presidential Millennium Scholarships. 

The Millennium Scholarship Scheme of the President’s Fund was launched in 2000 to assist students who excel in education but are unable to pursue their study due to financial constraints. 

“About 73,000 students in the NorthEast have stopped schooling due to poverty,” Mr.S.Rangarajah, North East Chief Secretary said.

Mr.Maithiripala Sirisena, General Secretary of the People’s Alliance participated as the special representative of the President Ms Chandrika Kumaratunge. W J S Karunaratne, Secretary to the President and Major General Asoka Jayawardene, Governor of North East Province were also present on the occasion.

Since 1995 President's Fund has been allocating large sums of money for the development of education in the backward areas of the country including the northeast
