The United People's
Freedom Alliance (UPFA) and the United National Front (UNF) concluded their
election campaign yesterday for the April 2 polls.
President Kumaratunga
appealed to the people to join hands to rid the country of war, uncertainty
and corruption; she urged them to move towards peace so they could regain
their lost rights and be free of burdens.
At the UPFA rally in
Kurunegala, a town, 80km north of Colombo the President said the Freedom
Alliance will be deeply committed to usher in a permanent peace in the
country after assuming office after the April 2 election.
“We will openly invite
the LTTE for discussion immediately after coming to power to take forward
the peace process and to establish permanent peace in the country,” she
said.
Meanwhile Prime Minister
Ranil Wickremasinghe requested all the people to preserve peace during the
election period.
“We conducted the whole
election campaign in a peaceful atmosphere without any political
interference. I call upon all of you to protect peace before, during and
after the election,” he said at the UNF rally held in Colombo.
