World leaders congratulate new government

Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee congratulated President Kumaratunga on the victory of her United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) in the parliamentary elections.

The Indian PM in a letter to the Sri Lankan President said “further strengthening the wide ranging partnership between India and Sri Lanka remains a priority for India”.

Vajpayee also wrote to new Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse, congratulating him on his assumption of office and underlining the “priority India places on regional peace, stability and development as well as on a strong bilateral relationship”.

The new Sri Lankan Premier received further good wishes from the Prime Minister of Japan Junichiro Koizumi in a congratulatory message yesterday.
