Cabinet swears in
[April
10, 2004 - 9.00 GMT]
Thirty
one new ministers of the proposed 35 member cabinet took their oaths of
office this afternoon before President Chandrika Kumaratunga. Prime Minister
Mahinda Rajapakse was appointed Minister of Highways in addition to his
Prime Ministerial duties. The Ministries of Defense, Constitutional Affairs
and Education will come under the purview of the President herself. Lakshman
Kadirgamar was made Foreign Minister the same portfolio he held in the
Peoples Alliance Government.
At today’s ceremony at the President’s House attended by family and
friends of the new appointees, several Deputy Ministers were also sworn-in
before the President.
