New Government Ministers cautioned against abuse of power and public funds
[April 17, 2004 - 10.30 GMT]

The 13th Parliament has been summoned to meet on the 22nd of April. The President meanwhile has issued the Ministers and Deputies of her new Government a strict code of ethics. She told her Ministers “The people have given us a very clear mandate and it is our duty to dedicate ourselves to the task of fulfilling their aspirations”.

In a three page letter to all Ministers, the President has called for discipline and decorum in both their public and private life. The Ministers have been cautioned against abuse of public funds. They have been told their entitlement is just two official vehicles each and a limited number of security personnel. There is also a taboo on the employment of kith and kin as personal staff. The President has said senior appointments in Ministries and Departments should be made on merit and after consultations.

There has been a curb placed on excessive foreign travel. The Ministers have also been cautioned against unnecessary refurbishing of ministerial offices and asked to use state owned buildings at all times instead of renting out private premises.
