Resolve IDP issue- UNHCR urges govt. and LTTE
[April 30, 2004 - 8.15 GMT]

The UNHCR yesterday urged both the government and the LTTE to immediately resolve the long standing issue of internally displaced persons in the North East of Sri Lanka.

“There needs to be a renewed focus on resolving this humanitarian problem”, United Nations High Commission for Refugees Inspector General Dennis McNamara told a news conference after completing a two week visit here.

He welcomed the government’s commitment in giving priority to the return of refugees and displaced people and said meetings he had with government, non-governmental and UN agencies had been positive.

“A lot has been done but a lot remains to be done. You can’t build peace without stability among the people and we believe there is an opportunity here which can benefit all sides”, McNamara said.

He also met LTTE Political Wing Leader S.P. Thamilselvan to discuss how the agency could effectively contribute in ensuring the rights of the displaced. McNamara said the LTTE had extended its fullest cooperation towards this goal.
