Archbishop Malcolm Ranjith - Papal Nuncio in Indonesia

Pope John Paul II has appointed Rt. Rev. Dr. Malcolm Ranjith as Papal Nuncio to Indonesia and East Timor transferring him at the same time to the see of Umbriatico as Archbishop, the Holy See announced on Thursday April 29, 2004.

Archbishop Malcolm Emeritus of Ratnapura was appointed Adjunct-Secretary of the Sacred Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples in 2001.

He was ordained priest by Pope Paul VI in 1975 in Rome and assumed duties in 1991 as Bishop. A scholar in Sacred Scriptures and well versed in nine languages, he functioned as Auxiliary to the Archbishop of Colombo Rt. Rev. Dr. Nicholas Marcus Fernando for five years.

Archbishop Malcolm Ranjith is the first Sri Lankan to hold a Vatican diplomatic post as Papal Nuncio
