Arjuna Ranatunga today swore in before President Chandrika Kumaratunga as Deputy Minister of Industry, Tourism & Investment Promotion. He will serve as deputy to Minister Anura Bandaranaike.

Ranatunga entered politics in 2001 and has been a Member of Parliament since. A former captain of Sri Lanka’s cricket squad, Ranatunga led the team that secured the world Cup in 1996. He made his test debut at the age of 18 in Sri Lanka's inaugural Test. He is a son of former Parliamentarian Reggie Ranatunga, a legislator who represented the Gampaha District.

The junior Ranatunga in 2001 and the recently concluded April elections successfully sought representation from the Colombo District, a stronghold of the United National Party.
