sportsman sworn in as deputy minister [May

Arjuna Ranatunga today swore in before
President Chandrika Kumaratunga as Deputy Minister of Industry, Tourism
& Investment Promotion. He will serve as deputy to Minister Anura
Bandaranaike.
Ranatunga entered
politics in 2001 and has been a Member of Parliament since. A former captain
of Sri Lanka’s cricket squad, Ranatunga led the team that secured the
world Cup in 1996. He made his test debut at the age of 18 in Sri Lanka's
inaugural Test. He is a son of former Parliamentarian Reggie Ranatunga, a
legislator who represented the Gampaha District.
The
junior Ranatunga in 2001 and the recently concluded April elections
successfully sought representation from the Colombo District, a stronghold
of the United National Party.
