‘A strong link with the village shrine will revive moral values among youth” - President

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga yesterday 9th May launched a program to integrate the village community with the local temple.

“This is the best time to pursue such a program to revive the morals of our people, especially the youth, whose values have been deteriorating rapidly”. The program ‘Punya Grama’ will reach every member of the community irrespective religion and race to achieve peace”, she said.

The ceremony at the President's House was followed by an alms giving for one-hundred senior Buddhist monks from all over the island to commemorate the Vesak festival.

The ‘Punya Grama’ program is centered round the village temple with youth participation. The practice of Buddhist Philosophy and the noble principles and moral values taught by other religions will be imparted to the youth. The program also includes vocational training for village.

It is to be implemented in eleven districts beginning with Ampara and Anuradhapura. The President’s Fund will finance the pilot program by donating Rs 4.4 million. Many local and overseas contributors have pledged to assist the program.

The Members of the clergy, Prime Minister and Mrs. Mahinda Rajapakse, Ministers and Parliamentarians, Commanders of the three Armed Forces, the IGP, and students of several schools groups were present on the occasion.
