Norwegian Foreign Minister Jan
Pertersen, Deputy Minister Vidar Helgessen, Ambassador Hans Brattskar and
other officials met with President Chandrika Kumaratunga on Monday May 10,
to discuss possibilities of taking the peace process forward.
The Norwegians had a
further meeting with LTTE leader Vellupillai Prabhakaran, Tuesday May 11. On
the same evening the Norwegian facilitators called on President Kumaratunga
to brief her on their meeting with the LTTE leadership.
A communiqué issued by
the Royal Norwegian Embassy quotes the Norwegian FM as saying, “We had
constructive and positive meetings with both parties and there is a clear
commitment from the government and the LTTE to resume direct
negotiations”.
Mr. Jan Peterson also
said “some issues needed further discussion before negotiations could
start and that Norway would continue to consult with the government and the
LTTE in the coming weeks”.
The communiqué states
both President Kumaratunga and LTTE leader Prabhakaran reaffirmed their
request to Norway to act as facilitator for the process.
