The government decided to grant compensation to Tamils who were victims of communal violence from 1981 to 1985. The Cabinet yesterday approved a sum of Rs. 722 million for the purpose.

According to Cabinet Spokesman Minister Reginald Cooray, President Chandrika Kumaratunga presented the Cabinet paper to obtain funds to implement the recommendations of the 'Truth Commission' that inquired into the incidents of communal clashes, especially in 1983.

The Commission has identified 946 eligible cases for compensation, of 2276 cases it inquired into.

The Cabinet of Ministers has also decided to table the list in Parliament of people affected by these clashes. A 'national day of reconciliation' is to be declared to indicate the nation's regret.

Among other decisions taken by the Cabinet yesterday was the appointment of a committee to investigate the promotions and new appointments made just before the general election in April.

A proposal was also approved to amend the anti-corruption bill. The bill is to be reviewed by a panel of expert lawyers and will be presented within a month.

A National Council for Economic development will be appointed at the Presidential Secretariat to strengthen the ministries and co-ordinate their programs.  It was also decided to set up a National Procurement Institute to ensure the maximum utilisation of foreign funds.
