Estate development now under one ministry

Subjects under the Ministries of Community Development and Estate Infrastructure have now been brought together under one Ministry as per gazette notification published last week.

The Ministry was originally created by President Kumaratunga in June 1997 to cater to the needs and development work of the plantation community. That was impaired when the Ministry was bifurcated in 2002 because of which co-ordination on inter-related subjects became difficult, political sources said.

The people of the plantation areas will now be able to reap the benefits envisaged by the President, Ministry sources said. The Ministry is expected to fully renovate 70,000 line-room housing units and build about 50,000 new housing units in the estate sector with all the necessary basic facilities within the next five years.
