Sri Lanka has acceded to
the Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed
Conflict. The Instrument of Accession signed by Foreign Minister Lakshman
Kadirgamar was handed to the Director General of UNESCO by Sri Lanka’s
Ambassador to France Ananda Gunasekera.
Sri Lanka’s accession
coincides with the 50th Anniversary of the Convention which was
celebrated May 14, 2004. With its compliance Sri Lanka has expressed support
to international efforts to reduce effects of armed conflicts on the
cultural heritage of nations.
The Convention for
the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict was
adopted at the Hague in 1954 in the wake of the massive destruction of
cultural heritage sites during the Second World War.
The Convention
contains provisions to protect immovable and movable property including
monuments of architecture, books and other objects of artistic, historical
or archaeological interest as well as scientific collections.
