President Kumaratunga will be awarded the
Ceres medal by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). This is in
recognition of her efforts to foster rural development and peace in Sri
Lanka, as well as her personal collaboration with FAO in the 1970s.
The medal will be awarded to President Kumaratunga by Dr. Jacque Diouf,
Director General of the FAO on Friday May 28, 2004, in Colombo.
The Ceres medal, so named after the Roman goddess of agriculture, has been
awarded since 1971 by the FAO to distinguished women who have contributed to
the fight against hunger.
Among previous recipients of the medal are Indira Gandhi, Prime Minister of
India, Mother Theresa and Sirimavo Bandaranaike, Prime Minister of Sri
Lanka.
